News Story

Last week, Contact’s CEO Jack Dale-Dowd headed to Westminster for a special Parliamentary reception hosted by Arts Council England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, at an event recognising the cultural and community value of pantomime and festive programming across the UK.
While panto is known for its dramatic dames, loud boos, and the timeless cries of “He’s behind you!”, the conversations in Parliament focused on something even more meaningful: its role as many people’s (especially children’s) very first experience of live theatre.
For countless families, a festive panto is the moment a child feels that first spark, the magic of lights coming up before the thrill of seeing a story unfold right in front of them. It’s a uniquely British tradition that is joyful, welcoming and deeply rooted in community. Up and down the country, panto fills theatres, brings schools together and offers shared escapism at a time when we all need it most.
But alongside its joy, the sector recognises the challenges: ensuring theatre remains accessible, improving representation onstage and off, and keeping pricing within reach for families who want to be part of the experience.
At Contact, this commitment is at the heart of what we do and it has been for over 500 years now. We believe everyone should be able to enjoy that first encounter with live art, even when money is tight. That’s why we offer our Pinch Tickets, our lowest-priced tickets available to anyone who needs them. No paperwork. No questions. Just select the ‘Pinch’ option at checkout.
Jack’s day in Parliament also meant reconnecting with inspiring leaders from across the arts and a reminder of the creativity, passion, and resilience powering this sector, even in tough times.
As panto season arrives at Contact, we’re proud to champion its importance not just as entertainment, but as a gateway to that moment when many young people first discover the wonder of the arts.
And that’s something worth celebrating, protecting, and sharing widely.
