About Do It Yourself: Making Political Theatre

“How do we do it ourselves?”

Following the publication of Common/Wealth's first book, Do It Yourself: making political theatre, this 45 min talk by co-author Evie Manning (Co-Founder/Co-Artistic Director of Common/Wealth) and Co-Editor, Prof. Jenny Hughes (former Co-Chair of Common/Wealth and Professor of Drama at University of Manchester) will share how we started as a DIY company, how we’ve made shows along the way and why making political theatre is critical and urgent now more than ever. There will be time for questions at the end and hopefully it will encourage you to do it yourself!

Workshop - Do It Yourself: Making Political Theatre

Prompted by the publication of Common/Wealth's first book, Do It Yourself: making political theatre, this workshop will give you an insight into Common/Wealth, why the company exists, and how we highlight social injustices through making high quality award-winning theatre.  Try out some of the exercises in the book that we hope will inspire and enable you to work with others to create political theatre to make social change. This is an ‘on your feet’, dynamic workshop that encourages thoughtfulness alongside action.

Suitable for people new to theatre, experienced theatremakers, activists and community organisers.

This workshop is available to book as an additional event alongside the talk, with limited numbers available. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Time: 13:30, directly following talk.
Duration: 1 hr 30 minutes (with 10 minute break)
Age guidance: 16+
