Manchester's young spoken word collective.
Young Identity (YI) was formed in Moss Side, Manchester in 2006, and is one of our longest standing and most important partnerships.
Young Identity is a twenty-six strong group of young poets, led by the senior poets, Shirley May and Ali Gadema (the co-coordinators). YI represented Manchester in the ‘Apples & Snakes World Cup Slam Championship’ in 2006 and 2010, where they were supported by Inna Voice.
Within Young Identity is the ensemble performance group, Inna Voice, which is made up of the more experienced Young Identity poets and mentors, and it is interchangeable. Over the last six years, YI and Inna Voice have performed all around the UK and internationally, working with esteemed artists such as Lemn Sissay, Roger Robinson, John Berkavich, Zena Edwards, Rudi Goblen, Mahogany Browne and the legendary Saul Williams.
In preparation for a 2010 performance at the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City, YI underwent a series of workshops created and facilitated by poets including Regie Cabico & Michael Cirelli (Urban Word NYC), Shirley May, Ali Gadema and Desiree Reynolds (Peepal Tree Press).
Young Identity experiment with a plethora of creative writing genres including poetry, prose and writing for the stage and screen; catering to many creative palettes. The group recently produced three short films on a Media Box funded project and were involved in all the stages of production. The group prides itself on honest and active literature, and producing work that pushes boundaries.
The group is open to the novice and polished wordsmith alike! Bring a notebook, a pen, and an open mind; welcome to the Gateway to Genius.
