You may remember back in September 2019 we partnered up with STUN (Sustained Theatre Up North) to get on the hunt for an artist or company who uses Grime music to connect with audiences. The winner would be commissioned to work towards a studio-scale show presented in our Contact building.
We are delighted to announce that we have co-commissioned:
Manchester Grime artist, MC Hypes to create a brand new piece of work to be premiered at Contact in the future.
As part of the Arts Council project grant-funded programme, Connecting the Dots, grime veteran Hypes will create a unique live performance called ‘The Treatment’ which explores mood, ADHD diagnosis and therapy.
A native of Manchester, Hypes honed his skills in youth clubs, park clashes and raves in and around the city. A longstanding figure on the grime scene, Hypes’ talents have been recognised by platinum-selling crossover grime artists, touring with the likes of Tinie Tempah and Tinchy Stryder. Known for his sharp, distinctive and boasty style, Hypes is an artist that Contact and STUN are incredibly excited to be supporting in the next stage of his artistic journey.
On being awarded the commission, Hypes said:
Hypes will receive a cash commission in addition to dramaturgical and production support from STUN and Contact, working with spoken word artist and theatre maker Keisha Thompson, and Contact’s Artistic Director Matt Fenton.
