Artistic Director/Chief Executive
Matt Fenton joined Contact as Artistic Director/Chief Executive from 2 September 2013. He leads on the overall artistic and organisational activity at Contact. Recent co-productions include No Guts No Heart No Glory, CommonWealth Theatre’s award-winning show made with young female Muslim Boxers; RITES, the critically acclaimed Contact and National Theatre of Scotland co-production exploring Female Genital Mutilation (FGM); Under the Covers by Stacy Makishi and Contact Young Company; and The Spalding Suite, FUEL’s show exploring basketball culture by Inua Ellams and Benji Reid.
Matt was previously Director of Live at LICA (Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts), Lancaster University's professional arts organisation. Combining Nuffield Theatre Lancaster, the Peter Scott Gallery and Lancaster International Concerts, Live at LICA plays an important national role in commissioning and presenting contemporary work across art-forms from the likes of Forced Entertainment, Lone Twin, Rajni Shah, Invisible Flock and Franko B. Matt established a strong focus on innovative participatory practice, as well as developing the role of local residents and young people as programmers and curators. Until 2013, he also taught on the Lancaster University Masters degree in Contemporary Arts Practice, a course he developed in response to the needs of early career artists.
Matt's background is as a theatre programmer and director, most recently working with Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy), Imitating the Dog and the Ligeti Quartet.
