Future Fires 2010

Katherine Wilde

Engaging young people through opera

Katherine’s Salford Opera Action Performance project engaged participants from Lower Broughton, Salford and surrounding areas in opera.  Participants explored the plot of an existing opera, The Wedding by Igor Stravinsky, and used the music/drama to create a series of artistic responses, which included dance, drama, and spoken word pieces.

The project culminated in a live performance of The Wedding at Contact.  The work was performed alongside a professional cast of musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music.

“Taking part in Future Fires was the kick-start and motivation to take a leap of faith and commit my time to developing as a director. Without the support and trust I am sure that I would not have had the confidence or know-how to go about things by myself, and I am very grateful that the experience has left me with something that I can talk about with a sense of pride.”
