Junges Theater Basel
Junges Theater Basel has been providing a space for young people from Basel in Switzerland to come together to create theatre since 1997. Involving young people in all aspects of the theatre, their work focuses on power structures and society. The courses/ groups are open and the youngsters chose who they want to work with. Their CTW twin was First Wave Hiphop Collective from Wisconsin, USA.
As their application activity to be part of CTW 2010, Junges Theater Basel decided to explore 3 different activities that reflected their interest in power and voice. First they went to the city hall of Basel for the introduction of the company. Every member of the group presented themselves at the position of the speaker of the parliament with a personal demand on their behalf, something they would ask the mayor to do. They went out into the streets of Basel and used movement styles to copy people on the street, on a bench or waiting at the tram, in front of a shop window… They then went on to ask members of the public do things for them, exploring ideas of persuasion and power.
Junges Theater’s performance during CTW2010 was Last Man Standing.
Why is power sexy? What makes strength attractive? Based on Richard III by William Shakespeare, Last Man Standing is a dramatic exploration of being bad and taking the short way to the top.
