Cheshire East Youth Theatre
Bringing Spoken Word and Digital Arts to Young People
Contact worked with Cheshire East Youth Theatre (CEYT) from September 2012 to March 2013 on a project working across all of Cheshire East Youth Theatre’s ten groups around five locations in Cheshire. The project saw each youth theatre re-write one of Chaucer’s famous Canterbury Tales using spoken word and digital media; re-telling it through their own imaginations.
As well as providing workshops directly with the participants (aged 5-16), our Creative Experts delivered sessions for the different youth group leaders, teaching them techniques in spoken word and digital art which they could pass on to their groups. The project ended with all of the 10 groups, from their five different communities, coming together and sharing their performances with each other and to the public at Crewe Lyceum in a promenade performance; with the audience being guided round the different tales by Chaucer’s characters themselves.
The project used plenty of different digital skills and techniques to explore the tales including film, photography, soundscapes, live technology in performance and using IPads and social networking. All of which helped the young people to engage and access the language of Chaucer better.
