Developing Debating Skills with the BBC
BBC Learning – Free Speech
Contact’s Creative Experts have been working with BBC Learning’s Free Speech projects over the last year. They deliver workshops that introduce a group of young people to debating skills as part of a weeklong BBC course in which they make two short films.
Creative Experts from various artistic backgrounds have delivered over 12 workshops across the country for the BBC Learning Free Speech project. Locations include Liverpool, Cambridge, Swansea and a week’s worth of sessions at the Edinburgh Festival.
The day long sessions see our facilitators work with young people aged 18-30 from a diverse range of backgrounds. A topic is selected which is explored and debated throughout the day through a creative toolkit of exercises. Previous themes include unemployment, debt and democracy.
The sessions prepare the participants for the rest of their week long course creating two short films with the BBC. They also improve essential and transferable skills including communication, confidence and how to constructively present an opinion.
‘The facilitators were very skilled at engaging the groups, they responded to the group dynamics and needs, and delivered a fantastic day’s activity each day, relevant to the themes of learning to debate and voice their opinions effectively.’ – BBC Learning
