And just like that…The Agency is upon us again. The advertising is over, the Agents have been recruited (well done Steve Vickers and team!) and we are ready to embark on the magical journey of The Agency with 18 new young entrepreneurs ready to step towards success.
For those who aren’t familiar with The Agency, it’s a pioneering project that empowers young people to develop ideas that can bring change to their communities. It originated with Marcus Faustini, a theatre practitioner from Rio, Brazil and for the past three years it has been delivered by Contact in Moston and Harpurhey in Manchester and The Battersea Arts Centre in London.
Over the next 12 weeks, our Agents (think participants, except they are Agents because they instigate, interrogate and integrate), will be guided through a creative, challenging and inspirational methodology which will empower them to create projects that benefit their communities. They will present their ideas to an independent panel of professionals and 3 projects will be given £2,000 of funding to make it happen.
This week, we focused on ‘the compass’. The Compass is an exercise that challenges our Agents to produce a tool that can be used to help them navigate The Agency journey. It is about connecting the Agents with their true desire and then thinking of how they can use form and respond to their territory to achieve their desire.
The Agents were also introduced to the importance of aesthetics and visual presentation of ideas. They were set the challenge of producing a compass and presenting their compass to the group.
We also played ‘smooth pass’, one of Kate Bradnam’s (Lead Faciiitator) favourite team building games. With a room full of new Agents, team-bonding is going to be essential. We reflected on the game, discussing the learning that took place as a result of the exercise.
Through the exercises, the Agents have started their Agency journey in earnest. The group have really approached the process with gusto and we are excited to see what next week has in store.
