After attending the primary school on a weekly basis since before chiristmas I have finally started my sessions!
Session One:
- I introduced the theme of Pirates to the children and asked them if what they knew about Pirates. All the children said they liked them but wouldn't want to be a Pirates friend because they are naughty... (a bit of a worry when in the next session a Pirate asks the children for their friendship...!)
- I then read the story 'The Night Pirates' which really engaged the children to a high level and the children were all very excited when I said that the class could keep the book!
- After afternoon play we went on a 'Pirate Adventure' a drama activity that I devised based on The Night Pirate book. The adventure was a group improvisation which allowed the children to develop their imagination whilst doing drama in a fun, unthreataning way. I also learnt a lot from facilitating this session that will be useful to my own artistic practice.
Session Two:
- I devised a treasure hunt with clues around the school which was very exciting and required the children to work as a team and follow instructions. The clues then lead to the treasure which consisted of chocolate gold coins, a skull pencil to take home to complete homework with, and most importantly.... a message off Captain Albert!!!
- The children responded really well to Captain Albert and only one child didn't want to be his friend (I think she was a little scared of him). The children then wrote a letter to him and all of the children continued to write there letter when they had the opportunity for free play time!!
Overall, a very successful first week... I hope the next sessions go as well!! Fingers crossed!!
